Workshops on Demand: Super Advanced Reformer & Cadillac

As Pilates instructors, it is important that we carry on Joseph Pilates’ legacy. Unfortunately many training programs today only have time to teach the Pilates method up to the advanced level and focus primarily on the intermediate level. Therefore much of the Super Advanced material is now relegated to the archives. The Super Advanced exercises demonstrate the fullness and depth of the Pilates Method. They challenge advanced clients and teachers, and they keep us tied to Joe’s intentions. Since many of the Super Advanced exercises require the body to be both strong and flexible, they are not designed for every “body. However, we have a responsibility to our clients to be able to take them to the Super Advanced level if and when they are ready! This workshop is a fun reminder that we can always strive for more advancement in both our teaching and our practice.

Workshops on Demand: Reformer on the Mat

You need fancy apparatus to work hard in Pilates, right? ... WRONG! Mat work can be just as challenging if not more challenging than apparatus. In this workshop, we will take the exercises off the Reformer and put them on the mat so that clients can realize it is not the springs that work us but rather we work from the inside out! This workshop will help you break down the exercises with transitions, technique and cues. Reformer on the Mat is a great way to challenge your advanced clients but it is also a great teaching tool to progress your clients to the next level. This way they can familiarize themselves with the choreography of the exercises before trying them with straps and springs.

Workshops on Demand: The Art of Cueing

Cueing is to Pilates what icing is to cake; it makes everything better! This 2 hour workshop focuses on how to expand your cueing vocabulary, why cueing is so integral to teaching and when it is appropriate to layer in cues to a session or class. We will explore 5 different types of cues:
1. Powerhouse Cues
2. Secondary Powerhouse Cues (Shoulder Girdle)
3. Alignment Cues
4. Breath Cues
5. Pilates Principle Cues
You will learn additional cues to add to your repertoire as well as how they can deepen your clients’ understanding of the method. Step outside the usual "glide your shoulder blades down", or the ubiquitous "scoop the abs in and up" - refresh your vocabulary with a new knowledge of how, why and when to cue. This workshop is applicable to both mat and apparatus teachers.

Workshops on Demand: Barrels of Fun

In this 2 hour workshop, we will review beginner and intermediate level exercises and progressions on the Small Barrel, Spine Corrector and Ladder Barrel. Then you will learn classical advanced and super advanced variations on all the barrels. Last but not least, we will go over how you can use the barrel as a modification tool for clients with injuries and limitations. Come prepared to workout, be inspired and have fun!

Workshops on Demand: Pilates for Pregnancy and Beyond

Pregnancy is a highly physiologic state. Week by week a woman's needs are changing, so it is important to be knowledgeable and confident about how to teach these clients. In this 3 hour workshop, we will discuss common conditions associated with pregnancy as well as the postpartum period. This course includes a comprehensive study of pre and postnatal physiology including the musculature of pelvic floor. We will learn how to teach Kegels properly through imagery and breath. You will learn safety precautions and modifications to keep your clients fit and healthy for all 9 months of pregnancy and how to get them back in shape safely postpartum. Diastisis Recti is a common condition post pregnancy and if it is not assessed early the woman will always have a "mummy tummy" or protruding abdominal wall. Many traditional ab exercises can increase a diastisis so it is imperative that Pilates instructors know why to modify for this condition.

Workshops on Demand: Pilates for Back Care

Back pain is one of the most common reasons Americans go to the doctor. In fact, conservative estimates say that 80% of all Americans will experience some sort of back pain in their life! Many people start practicing Pilates as a way to deal with their back pain so it is our job as Pilates instructors to know what common conditions are out there and how to best serve clients who have these conditions. In this 3 hour workshop we will learn about 4 of the most common conditions- Disc Herniations, Sciatica, Spinal Stenosis, and Spondylolisthesis. We will go over what is contraindicated and what is safe for clients who have these conditions. You will learn how to progress a client with back pain and how we can help these clients move their bodies pain free both in and out of the studio.

Workshops on Demand: Stretching 101

How many times have clients asked you can we just stretch today? How do you honor this request but still give them a valid Pilates session. After all, the Pilates method is based on a balance of both stretch and strength and too much of one or the other is NOT a good thing! Stretching is defined as a form of exercise in which a specific muscle or tendon is deliberately flexed or stretched in order to improve the muscle's elasticity and range of motion. In this workshop, we will learn about the 7 different types of stretching:
1. Static Stretching
2. Dynamic Stretching
3. Active Stretching
4. Ballistic Stretching
5. Myofascial Release
6. Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation (PNF)
7. Functional Stretching
We will also go over all the classical exercises that have stretching inherently built in, how to assist your clients in stretching and how to make a client feel as if they are getting a stretch session when in reality they are just getting a Pilates session;-)
